Welcome to The Survivors Healing Project
- This nonprofit provides support for survivors of gun violence.
- I also provide services for children impacted by trauma.
Hello. I'm glad you found us.
My goal is to collaborate with Crime Victim Services, Community Leaders, local School Districts and other organizations to ensure that all children who are identified as trauma survivors have access to services that cannot be provided in a traditional school setting.
It is my vision to provide a safe space for children to learn and heal. The overall purpose of Drawing and Writing My Way Through Trauma is designed to meet the need for trauma-informed learning. This program will respond to the mental health and well-being of children aged 8-15.
*This program does not take the place of Professional counseling or Therapy.
There was a time in my life when I felt like I wasn't going anywhere. At that time, I was the DFW Chapter Lead for Parents of Murdered Children. While I was helping families process their grief, I felt like I should be doing more.
Then I found other Moms who were using their voices to fight to end gun violence. These mothers were volunteers with Moms Demand Action.
Moms Demand Action is an organization that was created by Shannon Watts immediately following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. It is now the nation's largest grassroots volunteer movement fighting to end gun violence.
As a survivor of gun violence, everyday is a challenge. Most people don't realize that experiencing trauma affects the brain. It changes how we behave in our personal and professional lives. It also impacts children's ability to learn. Trauma has the ability to change the way we view the world around us and it increases our anxiety.
Fast forward to the shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas in 2022. This shooting caused me to regress in my journey through healing. I had to return to the doctor because I was not okay. Once again my mental health was being challenged in a way that is hard to describe.
I have been teaching for over twenty years and this year was the most difficult to navigate.
In 2018, I attended my first Wear Orange Event, I didn't have an official orange shirt, so I purchased one at Pennys. It was the first time I shared my story.
Now, I Wear Orange in memory of my son Allen Fields, (nephew) Harry Taylor II, (student) Samuel Reynolds, and (step-grandson) Adrian Wadley.
I am grateful that Shannon turned her fear into action, and created a movement that gave me hope by giving me a voice and a vehicle to connect with survivors all over the country.
Thank you to the thousands of men, women and students who continue to join this movement of powerful volunteers and fill in the gap for survivors like me.
Please know that the work you do is the fuel that helps us #KeepGoing.

Your contributions will enable me to meet my goals of funding a Trauma-Informed education program for children in my community.
I have over 20 years of teaching experience and I am also a trained Trauma-Informed Literacy Coach.
This program offers tailored education and support for elementary- middle school children aged 8-15 who have been impacted by trauma. This course offers a unique creative outlet for children to express and process their feelings of trauma and/or grief in a safe and supportive environment.
It is my desire to make sure that students are heard, and empowered so that they understand how trauma affects them. The program teaches strategies that will help them heal and provide them with a toolbox full of resources to navigate their world a little easier.
Did you know that trauma can cause permanent changes in the structure and chemical activity in a child's developing brain?
This is why program's such as Drawing and Writing my Way Through Trauma are necessary. This program incorporates Art Therapy, through interactive workshops to help children express and process trauma through creative activities, including creative writing.
The program is aligned with the Michigan Standards for English Language Arts.

In my spare time I practice self-care by way of mindfulness, meditation and spiritual support from religious affiliation. Although I love to read, trauma has made my love for reading more difficult because I have trouble focusing as I'm sure many students do as well.
This program provides a safe space for students to share their experiences and learn from one another.
I am looking forward to working with children in my community to help them understand how trauma impacts their behavior and to guide them through the healing process.

Teaching is my passion. Creating a Trauma-Informed Classroom gives me the opportunity to continue doing what I love . After the shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, I realized it was time for me to leave my traditional classroom and create my own.
This is my way of honoring my son (Allen) and his children.
It is my hope that this program will give children a voice and to empower them to learn to control their responses to trauma.
I want students to know there are creative means in which to express themselves throughout their journey to healing.
* I will be utilizing the Texas Essential Skills (TEKS) , Best practices in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as well as other Research-based Literacy strategies.
